Candy Corn Challenge

Students were challenged to build the tallest freestanding tower with just 15 candy corns, 50 toothpicks and 3 large marshmallows (I forgot to say they couldn't use the cup, so some of them got creative and decided to use it in their plan).

Expressions

In 5th grade we have been working on understanding expressions.  In order to understand how to write expressions we created a big concept map of key words to help us understand the meaning of expressions in algebraic and word form.

After learning our properties, we learned how to simplify fractions and had some fun practicing.

Fractions in A Day

In TAG, the fourth graders have been doing a project titled Fractions In A Day.  We are allowed to make our very own dream day, and then create a schedule of the day.  We then made a pie chart to match the schedule, and put different categories (EX: Time at the airport).  We learned that to convert a fraction to a decimal, you just need to divide the numerator by the denominator.  We did a project with time, decimals, fractions, and graphs altogether!

Prime and Composite Numbers

In our prime and composite numbers unit we looked at some prime and composite numbers. Some prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 (ok that’s all I will list). Prime numbers are numbers with only two factors 1 and itself. Some composite numbers are 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 (ok that’s all I will list). Composite numbers’ definition is it has more than two factors.  We used arrays to figure out if the numbers were prime or composite because if the number only had two arrays then it was prime. If it had more than two arrays then it was composite.

EX: 11:1,11 See that is a prime number.
EX : 100: 1,2,4,5,10,20,50,100  See that is a composite number.

It was so exciting to see all of our 4th grade's Relaxation Area dioramas for their Backyard Getaway.  I can tell they really worked hard and got creative!

Integer Operations

In 5th grade we have been learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers.  We used "positive" and "negative" counters to represent positive and negative numbers in order to model the equations.  We also played Integer Football and use Puzzle Squares to solve problems.  The puzzles were challenging, but we didn't give up and completed the puzzle!

Google Expeditions

Our school got to participate in Google Expeditions today.  Students were able to go on "field trips" where school buses can't go.  We "went" to the depths of the oceans, Mt.  Rushmore, and even to Mars.  We had so much fun learning today!

Decimal Shopping

We are learning about decimals.  We did a project involving “shopping task cards” over the course of 3 days. There were 4 tasks for each project. We needed to estimate how much money we had from different scenarios and then look on websites for ads of things for us buy.  We estimated the cost of the money we made and the money we wanted to spend.  After that we found the actual amount of both.
I found the activity very helpful, and now I can add decimals better and estimate quicker.
It was really a helpful activity.
