Estimation with E180

My favorite “math warm-up” is Estimation 180.  For Estimation 180 we need to have a picture, a question, and our estimates.  We need 3 estimates, a too high, a too low, and an actual estimate.  I like to compare my estimates with previous 180 lessons.  For instance, I used Mr.  Stadel’s height to figure out an estimate for the light post.  Knowing that he was 6 feet 4 inches tall, I tripled his height, and then I ended up with 19 feet 3 inches, which turned out to be the pole’s exact height.  I am learning that estimating is one of the most important math skills that we will ever learn because it gives you an idea of what number range to look for an answer in.
