Flying Saucers

In math we created flying saucers and tested if the area of the circle makes a difference on how far the "flying saucer" can fly. Each person made 2 flying saucers with different diameters.  We put paper clips on the saucers to give them more weight, and flew them in the hall.  We flew each one 6 times. In the end we found out that the smaller one flew farther than the one with the larger diameter. I thought that it flew farther because it was smaller and lighter.  The big paperclips made it heavy enough for gravity to push it far.

Scatterplots and Robots

In class I made a robot and used it to help me create a scatterplot! First, I built a robot with Lego pieces. Then I programmed it to go forward only.  When I finished programming it, I tested it to see if it went far enough. It didn't so I programmed it to go farther.  Now I put it at the starting line and got my stopwatch ready.  I ran it.

It took my robot on average 10.58 seconds to go 3 meters and an average of 2.88 seconds to go .5 meters.  I made a scatterplot to represent the time it took the robot to go from each starting point.  I could tell from my scatterplot that the data was negatively correlated.  The less distance it had to travel, the less time it took to travel.

Passion Projects

This semester students have been working on Passion Projects which were developed from our Genius Hour ideas.  They researched a topic that they are passionate about and came up with a creative presentation to demonstrate their knowledge.  I loved seeing all the different topics that were presented.  I learned so many new things from my students.  Take a look at our awesome projects.

5th Grade Debate

Thank you to our PE coaches for coming in and listening to our 5th grade debate about whether the school should buy new gym equipment or not.  Both teams had valid arguments, and the coaches were able to provide some great insight.

Holocaust Newspaper

We made a nonfiction newspaper about the Holocaust using depth and complexity icons.  We started with an outline, and turned each section into a newspaper article that related to the depth and complexity icons.   We got to choose how we published our papers, and then presented them to the class. It was really fun.  Enjoy reading our newspapers below.
